As a monument to the history of space travel and invention, it stands as a shining example of a time in human history when we imagined space not as the cold dark inhospitable void that can kill you, but as a new frontier full of opportunity, human potential and excitement (and yes… full of monsters to battle and overcome). The Raygun Gothic Rocketship is a rococo retro-futurist future-rustic vernacular between yesterdays tomorrow and the future that never was, a critical kitsch. With this piece, we creatively explore the connections between science, science fiction, and art. ![]() Participants can interactively explore the rocketship's three interior chambers: Engine Room, Mid-section Living Quarters, Command Module. The RGR is an immersive rocketship environment consisting of a 40 foot tall, 15,000 pound steel and aluminum rocketship connected via walkway to a launch gantry. It is 40 feet (12m) tall and has a story to it with crews quarters, engines and more. Designed and managed by collaborators David Shulman, Nathaniel Taylor, and Sean Orlando, this gleaming, retro-futuristic immersive rocketship sculpture was installed from 2010-2013 at Pier 14, San Francisco. A Buck Rogers rocketship As things turn out is an art installation entitled, Raygun Gothic Rocketship and is a creation of the Five Ton Crane Arts Group with sponsorship from the Black Rock Arts Foundation. While the inside of the rocket was interactive when installed at Burning Man, unfortunately at its current location ADA restrictions, as well as a containment breach of parasitic spider lancers that started breeding like crazy (according to an insider) have rendered the interior of the rocket currently off limits.The RAYGUN GOTHIC ROCKETSHIP is a grant funded large-scale group installation piece, fiscally sponsored by The Crucible. The Raygun Gothic Rocketship (2009) is a grant funded large-scale art installation created by the Five Ton Crane Arts Group. Its presence inspiring the imaginations of all who see it, it stands tall as a symbol of what could have been, but never was. Originally created as a 2009 art installation for the Burning Man Festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, the large-scale immersion based piece currently resides on Pier 14, illuminated and dreamy at night and flashing with retro ingenuity during the day. This spectacular sci-fi sculpture is the creation of Bay Area artists Sean Orlando, Nathaniel Taylor, David Shulman and the dedicated crew of the Five Ton Crane Arts Group, who helped to bring their fantastic vision to fruition – a larger than life 1930's-1940's pulp fiction space ship, gleaming silver legs forever prepped for lift off, three interior chambers fitted with all of the whimsical knobs and dials that you dreamed of as a kid. A 40-ft-tall rocket ship glimmers in the sunlight on the rare occasion that the San Francisco fog allows it, and against the backdrop of the waterfront and the majestic Bay Bridge, this retro-futuristic icon is the jewel of Pier 14. The rocketship was designed to visit colonies, orbital habitats and planetary civilizations, and is highly adaptable.
